Phoebe Prince’s hometown in County Clare is heartbroken over the gut-wrenching suicide that claimed her life after months of bullying by South Hadley students now facing criminal charges, her former Irish babysitter told the Herald yesterday.

“It’s a hurt. It’s a loss,” said Anna Towler, who took care of little Phoebe after she moved to Fanore, Ireland, as a toddler. “We all suffer.”

Towler, who runs the Crumlin Lodge in the small seaside community, said the entire town attended Prince’s funeral Mass at St. Patrick’s Church. She teared up while discussing the packed service.

“Did I cry,” said Towler. “It was beautiful.” She added Prince’s remains were cremated in the United States prior to her funeral in Ireland.

The announcement of criminal charges against nine South Hadley students accused of criminally tormenting Prince for months before she hanged herself on Jan. 14 at her home made headlines across Ireland.

Towler said Prince’s father, Jeremy, no longer lives in Fanore, but she declined to say where he is. Prince’s parents have not spoken publicly about her death.

Resident Christina O’Connor, who also attended Prince’s funeral, said people welcomed news of the indictments.

“We’re very pleased that they were brought,” said O’Connor. “We were absolutely devastated here in Ireland and in Fanore.”

Residents described Fanore as a tiny community with a pub, post office, store, church and two lamp posts. It’s also a summer destination for surfers.

Prince’s father sold flowers and shrubs out of his business, Blueberry Center, said O’Connor, who was one of his customers. The teen’s mother, Anne, moved to Massachusetts last year.

“I’ve always found them to be beautiful people. Phoebe was a beautiful child, and we’re absolutely heartbroken over what happened,” said O’Connor. “No words could describe how the people in Fanore and County Clare felt.”

Towler was more ambivalent about the criminal charges.

“Justice is one thing, but then I think about their families and their community,” she said. “Justice has to be done. I suppose examples have to be set.”

Clare County Councilor Martin Conway, who is from nearby Ennistymon, called Prince’s death a “tragedy.”

“The reaction is one of sadness,” he said. “It’s a personal tragedy for her family.”

Tim Murphy, a librarian at the Ennistymon Public Library, said residents are appalled by the girl’s death.

Most people are pretty horrified and stunned that it could happen,” he said.
